Christmas Meets us in our Interruptions
In this sermon, Pastor Phillip Dunn addresses the challenging question of how to deal with life’s interruptions. Using the story of Joseph’s response to Mary’s unexpected pregnancy, he highlights three key principles that can help us navigate life's disruptions with faith and obedience.
First, Consider How God Might Be at Work (Matthew 1:18-20). When Joseph learned of Mary’s pregnancy, he initially planned to quietly divorce her. However, before taking action, he paused to reflect on the situation. Pastor Dunn reminds us that interruptions often require us to take a step back and consider how God might be at work, even when things seem unclear or unsettling.
Next, Trust the Word of God (Matthew 1:20b-23). The angel’s message to Joseph served as a reminder to trust in God's promises and to see how everything was unfolding according to God’s plan. Pastor Dunn encourages us to turn to God's Word in times of uncertainty, as it holds the guidance and truth we need when life takes unexpected turns.
Finally, Obey What You Know to Do (Matthew 1:24-25). Despite the confusion and the unknowns, Joseph immediately obeyed God’s command and took Mary as his wife. Pastor Dunn emphasizes that our trust in God is demonstrated through our willingness to obey, even when we don’t have all the answers or understand the bigger picture.
